Christmas is a time of joy, happiness and goodwill. It is a time of giving and helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves, especially impoverished children. For the past 57 years, one organization--the U.S. Marine Corps--has been the unchallenged leader in looking after America's needy children at Christmas.

In 1947, Major Bill Hendricks--with the support of members of his Los Angeles Marine Corps Reserve unit--collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. Bill's program was so successful that in 1948, the Marine Corps adopted it and expanded it nationwide as the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. In the intervening years, Marines have conducted 57 successful campaigns, collecting and distributing over 200,000,000 toys.

Please join us on Sunday, November 20 for our clubís annual support of this great event. Weíll meet at Ke'ehi Lagoon Park at 10 am and depart at 10:30 am for a run over the H-3 to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, where weíll collect your new, unwrapped toys (or cash contribution). For those of you who would like to do so, we will partake of the Sunday Brunch at the Officerís Club. The club puts on a great brunch including a sushi bar, omelet bar, crab legs, numerous breakfast and dinner entrees, desserts, etc. The cost is $17.50 (without champagne) or $20.50 (with champagne); a great value.

In order to gain entrance to the base, Craig Wood needs to know who will be participating in the event, so that he can provide names to the gate guards. Also let Craig know who will attend the brunch so he can reserve sufficient seats at the officerís club (the brunch is popular and well-attended). As we all know, the Porsche Club of America is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and we honored the occasion by having a car show on September 5, 2005, Labor Day, at the Aloha Tower Marketplace. Porsches from every era began streaming into the mall fronting the Aloha Tower at about 8 in the morning and by the beginning of the show there were over 30 gleaming cars on display. In addition to the perennial favorites, Kevin Ham displayed his beautifully restored 1958 Speedster; John Nadler brought his modified 2002 cab; Mike Yee displayed John's former highly modified 911; and Chip Hughes and Bob Craven had their brand new 997s there for everyone to admire.

Instead of our annual concours, we opted for a car show this year with voting by the general public. After a full morning of balloting, the First Place trophy went to Linus Pauling, Jr. and his 1964 cabriolet. Second Place was taken by Club President Ambro Iligan and his 1979 911 Turbo. Darryl Lee and his 2004 Carrera S took home the Third Place trophy. Congratulations to Linus, Ambro and Darryl.

We couldn't have asked for better weather for our show. The local group Island Heart was on hand again this year to provide live entertainment under beautiful sunny skies. We had a great turnout and everyone who attended had a great time admiring the cars on display and talking to their proud owners.

We want to extend our thanks to our primary sponsor Porsche of Hawai'i for its generous support of our event. The management of the Aloha Tower Marketplace also went out of its way to assist us in making this event a great success. Finally, thanks to all the members who came out to support the event. Without your willingness to participate we couldn't have had a show.

Club President Ambro Iligan and club members Darryl Lee, Ray Freitas, and myself, along with our significant others, took the red eye to Los Angeles the night of September 8, 2005. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, the group drove up to Solvang, the quaint Danish town north of Santa Barbara, for breakfast. Following breakfast and some sightseeing, we drove back to Ventura, the site of the German Autofest, the all Porsche car show held each September. This year the show celebrated the 50 years of Carrera production.

Early Saturday morning, we drove to the Ventura Fairgrounds for the start of two days of Porsche gazing, parts shopping, and hobnobbing with other enthusiasts. Thanks to the generosity of Ambro, the Hawaii contingent could easily be identified in their Porsche- Hawaiishirts and blouses. Each of us were approached during the show by people who either wanted to know where they could buy a shirt like ours or wanted to talk to us because they used to live in Hawaii, knew somebody in Hawaii or always wanted to visit Hawaii. We also ran into forme member Brian Lum who had driven up for the show from his home in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The show was everything we expected. The southern California weather was perfect, there were hundreds of Porsches to admire, and there were parts and memorabilia to buy. The show featured a Peoples Choice show, as well as a full concours. In addition, hundreds of owners displayed their cars. Among the hundreds of great cars, two received the most attention, a Carrera GT and the Ruf Yellowbird.

When we weren't admiring the cars, we were busy shopping. Performance Products, Rennline, and many other after market vendors were present to tempt us with their wares. If that wasn't enough, one of the parking lots was turned into a huge swap meet on Sunday. All in all, it was great two days and I'm looking forward to going back soon.
