The Aloha Tower
Marketplace was once again the site of this year's Concours
d'Elegance. Eighteen PCA-Hawai'i members entered this year's
competition, which was held on Saturday, October 26, 2002.
Each entrant received a special Concours tee shirt and,
more importantly, had an opportunity to spend time with
others who share a love of Porsche automobiles.
After a few morning sprinkles, the skies cleared and we
had beautiful sunny weather for this annual event. Cars
started arriving a little after 8:00 a.m.
Once parked, the owners quickly set about putting those
finishing touches on their show cars. This year's entries
were divided into seven classes, including a modified division
and a wash and wax class. Unfortunately, only 911s were
entered in this year's competition and we didn't have the
variety of Porsches that have made prior year events so
interesting.
The PCA-Hawai'i Region extends its thanks to Scott Schulte
and Sean Ornellas of German Auto Specialists, Creighton
Wong of European Auto Specialists, Aran Sagon of Porsche
of Honolulu, and John Mayer for volunteering their time
to judge this year's concours. Without their willingness
to perform the difficult task of judging we could not have
had the event. Scott Schulte also went to the trouble of
bringing his race winning 911 to the Aloha Tower and placing
it on display. It was a real crowd pleaser.
While all the cars entered gathered attention, a few stood
out. Jack Cua's silver on black 996 GT2 probably offered
most people their first look at Porsche's latest road going
race car. Don't look for another one like it; it's the only
one in the state. Another car that isn't seen very often
on our streets is the 1994 Speedster and Robert Barkley's
pristine red example commanded a lot of attention.
Newcomer Ron Chavez entered his 1997 993 Twin Turbo, thereby
offering us an up close look at another rare car out of
Stuttgart. Ray Freitas' immaculate 1988 black slantnose
Turbo is a perennial crowd pleaser and this year was no
exception. Finally, John Nadler's highly modified 1977 911
drew oohs and ahs from everyone who stopped to admire it.
