-- North Shore Run:
Let the 2003 PCA-Hawai’i Events Begin!

It started out as a gloomy morning, so overcast my first
and only call that Sunday was to Richard Lau asking, "Are
we still on?" Well, fortunately for me, and twenty
other members’ Porsches, only a little liquid sunshine
dribbled on us as we passed over H-3 for a magnificent drive
up to the North Shore, with the sky eventually turning a
brilliant blue. Lucky, the radar on "weather.com"
had been right!
We started at Ke‘ehi Lagoon Park, gathering thirteen
variations of 911’s from 70’s forward which, included
four generations of Turbos, two generations of Cabriolets,
three generations of coupes, and one odd Targa (that would
be the Laszlo’s). A pair of Boxsters, one white AMG
Mercedes that would give us all a run, and Bones Marshall’s
Miata rounded out the caravan. The expected opportunity
to "open it up" on the H-3, however, was nearly
impossible, as traffic was worse than rush hour. Go figure
on a Sunday morning at 10 am!
We regrouped on the windward side at Liven Hawaii, where
four other Porsches joined the caravan. The windward contingent
was just as diverse as the leeward, with a 356, 993 coupe,
and two generations of Targas. The pictures tell it all,
a great, diverse group of Porschephiles. It was such a sight
to see, the manager at Liven Hawaii took photos of his place
of business with all of our cars in the foreground! We then
climbed back into our Porsches and ventured up Kamehameha
Highway toward the North Shore and our final destination,
Haleiwa Joe’s.
Along the way, participants had the chance to test their
knowledge of both local history and Porsche trivia with
a "Driver’s Quiz" that challenged everyone.
Ron Chavez came out on top, with James Beauparlant second,
and Terry and Debra Young and Romy and Madeline Barut, rounding
out the top finishers.
Our tour for the day ended at Haleiwa Joe’s for a
bite to eat. Diners were treated to pupus of calamari, spiced
shrimp, and sautéed mushrooms, followed by a local
fish sandwich, Paradise Salad, Caesar Salad, or Thai Chicken.
The food did not disappoint and the view and the "talking
story" with members was great.
Ending on a personal note, Pam and I truly enjoyed putting
together such a fun event and we hope to double the amount
of Porsches at the next rally we organize. The long Porsche
caravan, nearly twenty cars, was truly a sight to see for
both us, and for everyone along the North Shore watching
our parade go by. As President Ed Yuen has designated us
"Road Rally" coordinators, we hope to see as many
of you as possible the next time to talk story and to share
the experience and pride of being a PCA-Hawai‘i Porschephile!

your comments." You will be asked some identifying
questions and then provided a box in which to enter your
response.
During this trial period, the "Members’ Forum"
will proceed without a "gatekeeper," which means
that all messages submitted will be automatically posted
in full. The ground rules are that messages must pertain
to Porsche and PCA-related issues, cannot contain profanity
or abusive language, and cannot be disrespectful to any
person in the club. Given the high character of our members,
this hardly needs to be said, except for the record. If
all goes well, we will continue to run the "Members’
Forum" unedited and uncensored, so that we can say
exactly what’s on our minds, respectfully.

President’s
Exhaust Tips

Dear Members:
Okay, so you missed the North Shore cruise and you’re
kicking yourself for not having joined us. Well, don’t
despair you’ll have another chance to join your fellow
Porsche owners for a day of fun and relaxation in June.
On Sunday, June 8th, we’ll be having our annual
picnic at Kamehame Ridge Park. The picnic was a huge
success last year and we’re hoping that even more club
members will join in the festivities this year.
All you have to do is fire up the old (or new) Porsche and
enjoy a nice Sunday drive to the park. Once there, spend
some quality time admiring the other Porsches and lying
about how fast yours can go. All the while, I’ll be
cooking hamburgers and hot dogs. (I was elected President
because I was able to start a fire as well as a Porsche.)
So, there you have it. A day to admire great cars, enjoy
good company and eat free food. It doesn’t get much
better than this!
