Sun-Drenched
"Picnic on the Ridge"
-- Another Rousing Success!

You couldn't have asked for a more delicious
day for a picnic. The
wind, clouds, and rain of the previous forty-eight hours
abated and the
sun poured down on the Porsche Clubs hilltop gathering
in honor of new
members on Sunday, June 23, at Kamehame Ridge Park. This
second annual
"Picnic on the Ridge" was not only blessed with
good weather and record
attendance (thanks in part to the awesome turnout of diehard
356-ers),
but also with a scrumptious "pot luck" buffet
including salads, pastas,
casseroles, teri beef, sausage, hot dogs, chili, rice, chips,
dips,
condiments, ice-cold beverages, and a wide array of special
desserts
including a vanilla-frosted chocolate cake inscribed "Welcome
New
Members." A more tempting spread is hard to imagine.
The event began with two separate Porsche
caravans -- one starting from Keehi Lagoon Park by
the airport, one from Castle Hospital in Kailua -- that
joined in Kailua and cruised through scenic Waimanalo, Makapuu
Point, and Sandy Beach, before climbing Kamehame Ridge.
The Keehi Lagoon bunch, led by Ambro Ilagan, enjoyed
the added rush of nearly a dozen throaty Porsches roaring
over the H-3 to rendezvous with the waiting Kailua group,
headed by Richard & Maude Lau. All told, twenty-five
of Stuttgarts finest snaked up the ridge and assembled
in gleaming glory. It was a sight to behold, this chain
of glinting Porsches on Kamehame Drive -- from 356 Speedsters,
coupes & cabs, to grand touring 928s, to air cooled
911s of every year and description, and finally to the latest
water-cooled models in production -- the Boxster S and the
all-new 996 Carrera 4S.
The caravans and picnic were a success
because of the members and their willingness to participate.
Special thanks to set-up and food-prep teams: Marsha Lee,
Maude Lau, Gwen, and Liz Ilagan, and to cooks: Darryl Lee,
Ed Yuen, Richard Lau, and Jeff Yang, also to caravan leaders
Ambro Ilagan and Richard Lau. Thanks too for digital photos
by Ambro Ilagan and Darryl Lee. Kudos to the 356 Register
of Hawaii for their astounding turnout : Terry & Janet
Felts, Bernard Chung, Rick Woltz, Bill Simmons, Jim &
Tammy Beaumont, Linus and Stephanie Pauling Jr., Rudy Tamayo
and Les, Georgina Newman, John Peg, Rich Shimmons, Tony
Sussex, and Andy Curry, plus their friends and families.
Finally, a very big "Mahalo"
to each and every one of you for making our Porsche Clubs
"Picnic on the Ridge" another rousing success,
and especially to new members who participated: Jim Beaumont,
Jack Cua, Bob Kawamura, Lanson Kupau, Janice (Lanson's Affiliate),
Neil South, and Tom Yee.
